Nokia Files Patent Application For New N Series

According to Nokia’s latest patent application filing, it seems they intend to add another N series device to their existing range. There also seems to be a few detailed drawings that were provided with the application. According to those drawings, the new phone will not be just another slider, but will also have the camera portion, located above the display, rotate 90 degrees.

There’s no official information on what the megapixel count on the camera will be and not much information on the other specs either. However, by looking carefully at the sketches, one would notice that it would appear to have either a 6 or 8 megapixel branding. Then again it’s just an unclear image so we’ll just have to wait and see. It’s quite likely that the official announcement of this device, if any, will be out only sometime next year, so stay tuned. When we know you’ll know.

LG Shine Now in Titanium

Following the success of the LG Shine handset within the Black Label Series, LG has unveiled a new addition - the LG Shine Titanium color variant in bar and Slider form factors. LG Shine Titanium boasts of being the only phone in the market sporting a Titanium finish metal body. It incorporates the same features as the original LG Shine handset.

Anil Arora, Business Group Head, GSM said, “The new colours of Shine Slider will extend our success of the Shine series and will appeal to consumers who want their phone to say something about their personality. LG Shine color variants will magnify the modern style and chic image of the consumers, while the forthcoming premium handsets with unique design variations promise to be even more desirable, adding technology enhancements to unbeatable design.”

The LG Shine with new color variants has a 2 mega-pixel auto focus camera certified by Schneider Kreuznach and an expandable memory up to 1 GB with microSD cards. Access to Shine’s menu system is by an easy-to-use multi-function scroll key. It has a wide 2.2-inch mirror LCD screen and supports GPRS and EDGE network compatibility, Bluetooth with A2DP and USB connectivity. It also has applications like Yogasanas for health conscious people, E2E dictionary, E-mail and Document Viewer.

LG Shine Titanium Shine Bar will be available for Rs. 8,290 and the slider variant will be available for Rs. 12,490. Also the shine silver bar variant is now available for Rs. 7,990 and silver slider for Rs. 11,990.

Nokia N81 8GB

Great music player
Free media content
Smooth slider action
Bulky, plain-looking design
Unergonomic key placement
Gallery viewing is slow
Navi-wheel not very responsive
Poor battery
View Specifications

In this age of high-end mobile phones (or should I say handheld computers and communication-cum-entertainment devices?) Nokia is a household name. Its latest addition to the stable is the N81, whose USP is a whopping 8GB of internal memory. Here’s my take on the 'Next Episode' in mobile technology.

Form Factor
I’ve decided to call this model 'Li'l Fatty' – its dimensions of 102 x 50 x 17.9 mm will explain why. At first sight (or second), this plain rectangular slider doesn't look impressive at all. On the top is a slider switch to lock the keypad, a 3.5mm earphone socket (good placement) and the power/profile switcher button. It has a set of stereo speakers on either side, and on the right are the volume/zoom keys and a dedicated camera key as well. At the bottom you’ll find the charging port and the new standardized microUSB port.

I do like the brilliant 2.4 inch display and the fact that in landscape mode, if you’re playing games, two buttons on either side of the earpiece become active. NICE! Since it’s 3G enabled there’s also a secondary VGA camera in front in addition to the 2 megapixel (WHAT?) camera with an LED flash in the rear.

The five way nav-pad under the display also doubles as a navigation touch-sensitive navi-wheel, which is a disappointment if you’re an iPod fan… or not. It only works with when the new shortcut menu (activated by a little gray button near the nav-pad) is on or when you’re scrolling through your music. Not the gallery, just the music files. There are four keys around the nav-pad that are dedicated to the music player. The top two are the track skip keys and the the bottom pair are the stop and play/pause keys.

The problem is the placement of these keys is absolutely ridiculous. You’ll more often than not end up activating the music player rather than deleting a word while typing and it won't activate the music player menu, just the last song that was playing. Trust me, you too will be startled when a song blares out really loud when you least expect it. The buttons are overly sensitive.

On the plus side, the slider is extremely smooth and responsive, and the large keypad is great. But I must admit I was quite disappointed by the overall design.

Nokia Reveals Eco-friendly Mobile

For those of you mobile maniacs who are also concerned about the environment (and we all should be) Nokia has, at their event in Amsterdam, announced a new Eco-friendly mobile phone – The 3110 Evolve. By Eco-friendly, we mean that its covers are made out of Bio-Sourced material i.e. 50% renewable material.

The 3110 Evolve is also quite a fully loaded device that supports Bluetooth withA2DP, infrared, has an integrated FM radio, a 1.3 megapixel camera, MP3 player and supports external memory with microUSB cards up to 2GB. It also supports EGPRS and according to the 3110 Evolve spec sheet it also uses a High Efficiency charger that's quite energy efficient as well. It runs on a Series 40 UI.

The 3110 Evolve is expected to be launched somewhere in the first quarter of 2008.

Backup Contacts v1.10

Transfer all or some of your contacts (phonebook) with all details intact from your Series 60 device to another Series 60 device via bluetooth (BT) or to a standard vcf file and exchange vcf files between 2 Series 60 devices running the backup contacts app. VCF files can also be imported by any PIM app supporting the VCF format. You can also send a vcf file from any device (PC, PDA) to the Series 60 device running the backup contacts app. To send vcf files from a Series 60 device to another device not running the backup contacts app you will need a file transfer utility on your Series 60 device (Series 60 default file manager or Fexplorer). This app solves the problem of accurately transferring contacts between 2 Series 60 devices. See the help file for full details.
